SIKKIM:
Small but beautiful. Sikkim is situated in the eastern Himalayas
. Spread below the Mount Khanchendzonga (8534 mts), the third
highest mountain in the world, and revered by the Sikkimese as
their protective deity. With an area of 7,300 sq kms and
measuring approx. 114 kms from the north to south and 64 kms
from east to west, the elevation ranges from 300 mts to over
8540 mts above sea level.
Sikkim's famous mask dances provide a spectacle, perhaps
nowhere to be experienced in the entire world. Performed by
lamas in the Gompa courtyard to celebrate religious festivals,
these dances demonstrate perfect foot work and grace.
ASSAM:
Assam the rich, green land of rolling plains and dense
forests is the gateway to the north eastern part of India. The
mighty Brahmaputra river that has its origins in Tibet charts
its majestic course through this state. This mystic land of
eternal blue hills and beautiful rivers is renowned for its tea,
rich flora and fauna, the world famous one horned rhinoceros and
other rare species of wildlife on the verge of extinction.
Barring Africa, there is perhaps no part of the world where such
a variety of wildlife exists.
ORRISSA:
Orissa has the largest variety of tribal communities,
which are at various stages of socio-economic development. At
one extreme are the group which lead a relatively secluded and
archaic mode of life, keeping their core culture intact, while
at the other extreme there are communities which are
indistinguishable from the general agricultural communities. The
tribal people express their cultural identity and
distinctiveness in their social organization, language, rituals
and festivals and also in their dress, ornaments, art and
craft.
